ABOUT DOUG

Born in Ottawa in 1945, lived in Vancouver from 1948 until 1978, in Whistler from 1978 until 1986 and in Squamish from 1986 to present.
 

Education & Experience

  • Attended University of British Columbia from 1962 until 1970.           

  • Received Bachelor of Commerce degree 1969.

  • Received Bachelor of Law degree 1970.

  • Articled at Goldman and Company, Vancouver, B.C. 1972.

  • Called to bar of Province of British Columbia May 14, 1973 and a member of the Law Society of British Columbia continuously until retirement in 2008.

  • Associate lawyer with Goldman and Company from 1973 to 1978 practicing primarily in the fields of civil and commercial litigation.

  • Associate lawyer with Paul and Company from 1978 to 1981 and a partner from 1981 to the present. Paul and Company was renamed Race & Company in 1991. Initially practiced civil, family and criminal litigation. Opened the Whistler office of Paul and Company in 1978.

  • The last 20 years of practice were primarily in the areas of corporate, commercial, real estate and wills and estates.

  • In the course of practice acted for clients dealing with all levels of government and First Nations, banks and lending institutions placing residential and commercial financing, purchasers and sellers of business’, purchasers and sellers of residential and commercial real estate, developers of commercial and residential real estate and have negotiated and advised clients on partnerships, joint ventures and corporate relationships.
     

Business Experience

  • 1979 - 1982: as one of seven directors of Mountain Development Corporation and Chair of the Board of Directors of that company which purchased lands and developed 80 single family lots in the Tapley’s Farm subdivision of Whistler on behalf of local resident owners. This subdivision required negotiations with the Resort Municipality of Whistler to obtain zoning as the first employee housing project in Whistler, and also required financing and servicing of the subdivision lands.

  • 1979 - 1987: as one of three directors of Wedgeview Properties Ltd. which responded to a RFP issued by the Whistler Village Land Company and was awarded the right to purchase and build in Phase 1 of the Whistler Village development. This project involved all aspects of planning, financing and construction of a commercial building and operating as a commercial landlord.

  • 1981 to 2008 – partner in Race & Company, Barristers and Solicitors and as such participated in management decisions in the areas of personnel and staffing, cash flow and maintenance of trust accounts, marketing and commercial tenancy issues.
     

Community Involvement

  • 1982 - 1985: member of the Advisory Parks and Recreation Committee at Whistler and participated in the planning, funding and building of the valley trail network as well as local parks and playgrounds.

  • Late 1980's: member of a committee to plan and review the cross country trail system in Whistler which laid the framework for the present Lost Lake cross country trail facility

  • 1979 - 1982: member of Rotary club of Whistler and participated in various community projects as a member of club.

  • 1993 - present: member of Rotary Club of Squamish. Have held a variety of executive positions including president in 1997-98 and as a member of the club have participated in a variety of community projects.

  • 1997 - 1998: co-chair of Squamish Health Care Foundation Society fundraising campaign.

  • 2003: chair of the steering committee struck to form Squamish Community Foundation

  • 2003 - 2006 was a director and secretary of the Squamish Community Foundation

  • 1998 - 2006: member of organizing committee for Squamish Triathlon

  • Volunteer assisting in the planning and construction of the Ray Peters Trail

  • 2007 – 2009 - Director of Callaghan Valley Event Organizing Society (CALOC) and volunteer for Biathlon events at the Callaghan Olympic venue.

  • April, 2007 – 2008 – director of the Squamish Oceanfront Development Corporation and chair of the Audit committee.

  • Member of the Research Ethics Board of Quest University from 2010 to 2016

  • November 2008 to present – Councillor of the District of Squamish and for various periods during that time have chaired the Community Development and Planning Committee, Policy Committee and Finance and  Audit Committee

  • Director of the Squamish - Lillooet Regional District as one of two representatives of Squamish from 2014 to present.
     

Sport and Recreation

  • Member of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club from 1957 to present and Squamish Yacht Club from 2007 to present.

  • Competed in sailing races since 1957 both locally and internationally.

  • Represented the University of British Columbia as member of Sailing Team in North American championships in 1963 and 1964 (winning in 1964) and Douglas Cup match racing championships in 1969.

  • Represented the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club in a variety of sailing competitions.

  • Represented British Columbia in the Quebec Challenge in 1984 – a sailing competition between teams representing the ten provinces of Canada

  • Represented Canada as a member of the Admiral’s Cup team in 1979 and 1981 – a three boat per country competition in Cowes and English Channel waters.

  • Represented Canada as a member of Clipper Cup team in 1980 and 1982 in Honolulu – a three boat per country competition in Hawaiian waters.

  • Participated in a variety of sailing competitions, regattas and offshore races on both coasts of North America, Caribbean, Hawaii and Europe.

  • Owned and raced own yacht from 1988 to 2000 in local races.

  • Presently own a 28 foot power boat moored in the Blind Channel, Squamish, B.C.

  • Cruised extensively on the coast of British Columbia and the Caribbean, Europe and Mexico providing an opportunity to visit a variety of coastal communities and facilities

  • Played rugby for UBC and Georgians RFC from 1968 to 1976.

  • Participated in cross country skiing competitions in Whistler and interior of B.C.

  • Participated in downhill skiing locally in Whistler as well as United States and European resorts.

  • Participated in variety of road races including marathons.

  • Participated in variety of triathlons including Iron man competitions in Penticton and Hawaii.

Presently enjoy mountain biking, fly fishing, sailing and cross country skiing.
